It's an Outfit Fit For a First Lady Kind of Day

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

I got so many comments from men on this outfit. I still haven't figured it out, but I think men only comment on outfits they don't understand. Here are some examples:

Yesterday when I was the only female in all of downtown Seattle in line to buy lunch (seriously, I couldn't find a woman anywhere around), a couple of businessmen decided I looked like I could be a First Lady. The comments went something like this:
Man 1: "Your dress looks very regal."
Man 2: "Or almost not regal, but just classic. Like a First Lady."
Man 1: "Yep, just like a First Lady. But with a weird necklace."
Man 2: "It isn't that weird. It looks like Lemon Drop candy."

Then I walked into our CEO's office to ask him about hotels for our tradeshow in Orlando.
Me: "Hey, J, was wanting to—"
J: "Weird necklace."
Me: "Thanks?"
J: "Well, actually, I think I like it. Yah, it's pretty cool."
Finally, as I was walking to the bus after work, I was approached by a homeless man.
Homeless man: "Miss, do you have any spare change for bus fare?"
Me: Eye contact+smile, shake my head no, keep walking.
Homeless man: "Has anyone told you yet today how beautiful you look? It's like you are that Middleland lady!"
(While hoping he was referring to Kate Middleton, I smiled to myself and kept walking.)

So what's the consensus among the female blog-reading community? Did I confuse all the poor men of Seattle with this outfit? For frame of reference, Seattle men typically look like this on weekends:

Here's the outfit:
Dress: H&M (on sale now for $10 in-store); Necklace: Etsy;
Belt: Target (similar); Shoes: Michael Kors (similar)

Can't help but love exposed zippers!

  1. lol at your "men of Seattle" picture! :D  I think the outfit is great!  Definitely agree that people comment more on outfits they don't understand - I get that stuff from a few people at work (always the same ones) a lot.

  2. That picture is SO typical! "Socks + Sandals Guy" is such a stereotype about Seattle, but it is 100% true :)

  3. That is so funny!  They obviously don't read fashion blogs, because that necklace is everywhere.  I agree with them that you look very classy!

  7. Love it.  You do look like that "Middleland" lady!  Love it.  Looks like something the Duchess herself would wear!  And that necklace really makes your smile pop!

I LOVE this outfit!!  I'll have to take a walk over to H&M on my lunch next week and see if it is still around!  Did you inform everyone that your necklace is the J. Crew bubble necklace that is ALL THE RAGE right now?  (No one needs to know it's from Etsy!)

  16. Thank you so much! I have heard from a couple other readers that the dress is all sold out - only left in pink as of last week. And as for the necklace - I want you to know it is from Etsy so you can go get a billion yourself!! They are so wonderful :)

  17. It's the houndstooth pattern, combined with the conservative yet sophisticated cut of the dress which just SCREAMS regal/political. It VERY much looks like something Princess Kate would wear. The statement necklace (and the yellow hair tie - nice) brings the whole piece together. It keeps the dress from being too stuffy while giving the look a colorful edge. High five!

You're totally right about men only commenting about outfits they don't understand. The confusion sparks JUST enough interest to give motivation to actually formulate a thought on the matter.

  18. Thanks :) I'll have another way I wore the dress on the blog early next week! Does Andrew comment on outfits ever?? Trav loves that he knows certain words - he'll say "i like your maxi today" or "great houndstooth pattern" and I just love that he pays attention!
